On April 27, 2013, the Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Ashland Police Department partnered with the Richmond District of the Drug Enforcement Administration for the 5th National Drug Take Back Event. During these events, citizens are encouraged to turn in expired and unwanted medications, no questions asked. These events are a great way to rid our county of narcotics that can end up in the hands of our youth. A recent national survey of high school students found that 24% of students reported abusing prescriptions drugs. See article.
The two Hanover County law enforcement agencies collected and disposed of over 480 pounds of prescription medications combined during this event. We are grateful to the continued commitment by both the Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Ashland Police Department to building a community committed to raising substance-free youth.
